I do not have administrative access at a certain computer (hence I cannot install nor configure a VPN connection), but I need to access my computer at home (the host). Both computers here and at home are running Windows XP. Is there a program that I can run without installing to setup a VPN client? Is there a way around my dilemma altogether?|||Here's an idea:
On your home PC, setup and configure copSSH.

I've done this on my Windows 2003 machine but it works on WinXP. Other considerations in this setup are your router, DynDNS service etc.
On your work PC, what about using KiTTY which is a SSH client for Windows BUT it runs off a USB key... so no installation

Now, you can SSH from your work PC to your home PC. Also possible is to setup a Remote Desktop session. Another software package Tunnelier helps setup and configure this sort of connectivity. And a portable / non-install version exists, too.

|||No, there is no VPN client that is not install based. But there are programs that you can install in quite mode, or hidden in your client pc. Without normal users knowing that there is a VPN Client.
There are programs such as NETSUPPORT MANAGER that can install through networks ang gateways, but if your client is login at the user account or you do not have sufficient rights to install to a specific client, I am afraid you will not be able to install.
