Which one of the following algorithms is used to send large blocks of data across a VPN tunnel?

Which one of the following algorithms is used to send large blocks of data across a VPN tunnel?

Diffie-Hellman

SHA

DES

MD5|||Diffie-Hellman - key exchange

SHA- hashing algorightm

DES - encryption algorithm

MD5 - hashing algorithm

Trick question their all used in VPN. DES is the one possibly encrypting/decrypting so I'd go for that, basically if SHA is right so could MD5 as they can both be used to verify packet integrity ...so can't be that. And Diffie a setup thing so maybe not.

However DES is not secure so Im real dubious.

I think SHA and MD5 is right as the question seems to be referring to data integrity checks (large blocks) if I can have 2 answers otherwise if one answer DES but id really think this is not right, no-one should use it basically its that weak.

How to run a VPN through PuTTY?

I am currently attending a university which allows internet access by opening PuTTY and keeping it open while I surf. If I close PuTTY I no longer have connection to the internet. Can a company track what internet site I am visiting if I am on their VPN?

What if I am not connected to the VPN? Can they still track, if it is a company computer?|||Hi John,

Without know more details about your company's network configuration, the short answer is, yes. If you are connected to the company's network through a VPN, it is possible that you are using their gateways for your internet traffic in which case it is possible that that traffic is being logged and tracked. That being said, there are a number of 'buts', if the VPN is configured to not tunnel HTTP/HTTPS traffic then the answer would be no. If the VPN is configured to not be the default gateway, then again the answer would be no.

If you're not connected to the VPN, the ability to track internet traffic is hindered. There are, however, a large number of software applications available on the market that offer remote traffic logging. These packages can "call home" to report back to a central logging system.

What are the differences in VPN and Internet?

I am trying to figure out why a company would choose VPN if they already have internet service, what does the VPN do for a company. |||The internet is generally a component of a VPN. A VPN is a virtual private network, of course.

Think of it like this...

Say you own a smaller company. You have an office with several floors, and about 30 computers. You want them on a network, but do not want to invest the money in having lines run all throughout your building, and bringing in other expensive equipment,

A VPN is a solution to that problem whereby you use the internet or some other public infrastructure to create your network.

There is a bit more to it than just setting up connections across the internet, security protocols and what not are in place to ensure that the "private" aspect of a VPN is kept.|||VPN is a Virtual Private Network. It allows you to connect to your company's network via a secure channel using your exisitng internet connection. Essentially, it protects any information on the connection from interception. An example would be the use of your company's Microsoft Exchange Server though MS Outlook to check your work email from home.|||A VPN will allow you to permit users to come into your network from the outside, like from home. Then they can work.

If your network does not have internet access in the first place, then you need not worry about a VPN.

The internet is the highways and streets that you drive. So you drive to your office. The VPN is the security at the gate that decides if you can go inside and park.

Right now to go between the two, I'd have to disconnect from one then use the other VPN to log in and connect to the other.

I'd like to somehow be able to connect to both companies at the same time preferably using one VPN client. Is there any solution for this I or the company could create?|||If you have a VPN router that can make one connection for you then you might be able to use your computer VPN for the second. However, this is not usually the case for most home routers. How do you connect 2 remote sites together using a cisco PIX site to site VPN? ?

I have 2 locations connected to my pix using IPSEC vpn. I need to two locations to talk to each other (using 4 digit dialing UDP).

How do I get the remote locations to talk to each other? New IPSEC rules at each location? Simple routing (ive tried)?

|||Just so you know, the Cisco PIX has reached end of life status with Cisco. There are newer solutions available from Cisco.

Site-to-site VPN relies on the appliances negotiating server/client status as well as authentication. Can the machines ping one another? If so, go ahead and try and send over the authentication to the endpoint and use a packet capture to try and verify the headers and authentication data are right. Are both set up properly?

If you want more flexibility, I'd probably recommend a Linksys (made by Cisco) brand router running DD-WRT open source firmware. There are VPN versions that allow for point-to-point VPN over WAN. The router can also function as a VPN server for your LAN. In addition, addons such as Snort allow you to further increase the security.

If there is connectivity, then there's probably a misconfiguration in your appliance. You'd need to check your setting and refer to the user manual.

Can my VPN service see my passwords I type in websites?

I recently signed up to astrill. This is a good VPN paid service. Can they see passwords I type into websites such as hotmail etc?|||The VPN tunnel you use with Astrill terminates at their servers and is then handed off to the Internet, unencrypted. At that point, whatever you send looks just like it would if you didn't use the tunnel. The only advantages of Astrill are anonymity, privacy in a public setting and the ability to skirt corporate firewall policies.

But some internet traffic is already encrypted anyway. The process of logging in to a web site like hotmail or your bank is encrypted. So Astrill can't see your password for those sites. Please note that hotmail only encrypts the login process. Reading your email is in the clear. How can I set up a VPN with my friend with out any technical knowledge?

I've found different programs on the net that you can set up a VPN server with but I don't understand how to use them. Are there any simpler programs out there or easier ways to do things?|||Honestly, I cannot forsee anyone doing this for anything other than malicious reasons, but for knowledge's sake, look up "Windows RAS". Very easy to setup.|||Not possible. You have to have a proxy list (usually called an ACL) that is passed through the VPN. How do i make a database that pulls info from a server localized? trying to vpn and connection times out?

When connecting via VPN, it doesnt pull or see the data. When the laptop is connected on the domain it populates all the fields perfectly. I tried to gather all the files and make a directory locally so that the user could use the database then when he gets back from the field would be able to synchronize. The application just hangs and fails. I ensured that the server recognizes this users account and laptop. The server that the app resides is windows 2000, the vpn is cisco. Will post more detials if it helps.|||From what you describe, it seems like the data is pulled from a database. How can I stop a VPN connection error 800?

I’m trying to connect my Netbook to my home network. Instead of connecting, I get this message: “VPN connection error 800: Unable to establish connection.” This hasn’t been a problem before. Is this because I’m using a new router? I just bought a new one about the time this started.|||Actually, since your router is new, it's probably working fine (but give it some time…). This error message is pretty much meant to tell you that the firmware on your router is out of date, but if it’s new, then theoretically, the manufacturer’s still supporting it.

One thing you could try is resetting the router. Normally, if you do this, it will download the latest firmware for it. If this doesn’t work, then your Netbook has some registry problems.

Registry issues are common for Windows users. Most of the time when this happens, people think their computer is just getting old and replace it.

What actually should be happening is that you should use a registry maintenance program to clean up your registry. You can extend the practical life of your computer a long time this way.

Basically your registry files can get worn out, out of date or lost. Registry clutter contributes a great deal to slow system performance and errors. It can even build up until your computer crashes altogether.

My favorite registry cleaner is right here: http://optimize-your-pc.com/regcure/repairing_errors.php. They're offering free scans right now so it's not like you've got anything to loose. It's helped me speed up my computer when I had registry problems, plus it makes it easy to clean out your temp files (which build up after a while and can really slow things down).|||Typically we have seen this because of GRE drop if firewall is off. I was wondering if it is possible to set up a VPN for 2 users that are in two different countries.|||You can; makes no difference if they are in the same or different countries.

Some countries may have legal restrictions but you did not ask about that.|||Yes, you can use a service like Hamachi to do a peer 2 peer VPN assuming it is legal in both countries.

I need to know if it is possible to connect to a wireless VPN using the sonicwall tz 100 series. I have looked for tutorials online and even tried the sonicwall website for help. As You Know , a VLAN is a virtual LAN. In technical terms, a VLAN is a broadcast domain created by switches. Normally, it is a router creating that broadcast domain. With VLAN鈥檚, a switch can create the broadcast domain.

This works by, you, the administrator, putting some switch ports in a VLAN other than 1, the default VLAN. All ports in a single VLAN are in a single broadcast domain.

Because switches can talk to each other, some ports on switch A can be in VLAN 10 and other ports on switch B can be in VLAN 10. Broadcasts between these devices will not be seen on any other port in any other VLAN, other than 10. However, these devices can all communicate because they are on the same VLAN. Without additional configuration, they would not be able to communicate with any other devices, not in their VLAN.|||You can try one of the links below. What is VPN and How do I get It?

On my Ipod touch, there is two things: Wifi Network (I know what this is) and then VPN, what is VPN? Is it free? How do I get it? And how do I set it up, I am very confused.|||VPN stands for Virtual Private Network

You say "Gee Thanks - now what does that mean?"

Here's and example

You work at Widgets Inc. and have access to the office network when you are at work.

You want to be able to access your office network from a remote location (your home - your really dedicated) over the Internet.

However, Widgets Inc, has some secrets they want to keep secret, so they want a secure way for you to connect. Leaving an open hole in their corporate firewall for your use is just too easy to hack.

Enter the VPN

Through some IT magic we will not go into, the IT group uses the router at the office and the router at you remote location (your home) to create an encrypted, secured connection between the two routers. The connection is for these two routers only, no other connections are accepted. The data passed back and forth is encrypted, so even if the packets were intercepted, they would not make any sense.

As far as you are concerned, you are at your house, and connected to the office network just as is you were at your desk.

The chances are you do not need a VPN.for your IPOD

Have a good one|||It stands for Virtual Private Network and you need Software to do it and truthfully you don't need it. This is for high profile Corperate Networks that are anal about security.

If i set a VPN network can i log in and have internet everywhere i go?

'i have an ipod toucb and there is an option to set up a VPN network? if i set it up will i have internet everwhere i go?|||Sure, anywhere there's internet connection so you can connect to the VPN!|||Basically, VPN Itself is not an internet but it requires to work through internet. VPN protects your data and identity in the internet world by routing your data through a secure tunnel which is encrypted under a protected tunnel which will not allow anyone to even see your data.

You just need to configure the vpn settings once in your device then wherever you go vpn will be just a tap away from your phone. simply it requires any sort of internet connectivity...|||yeh you can, vpn provides you the facility to anonymous everywhere|||Of course, there are special vpn services for iPod touch and iPhone. But most of the common ones should work too

How can I use VPN through my office network?

Basically I want to connect to my computer at office using VPN, but network addresses inside the company are private. There's a public IP address but how I can do to redirect the request to my computer in the office?|||Your office system has to be setup to supply a VPN connection. You can use Microsoft server or Linux server to accomplish that function.. but you will have to have one. (there are a couple of routers that act as VPN endpoints also -- Buffalo Technologies has one the server for issuing local addresses is built into the router.) When you connect the server will "tunnel" a local address for you to use.

You can use any internet conneciton type if you use a service like DynDns to keep track of your system, or get a fixed IP issued for your office.

Once that is setup you just setup a network connection on your machine at home for the VPN by ADDING network connection in the control panel.|||u need to have a static IP address in ur office in order to configure it on a windows server or a VPN server.

then if u configure a VPN server on that IP Address, u can dial in to ur office network and start accessing.|||You need a fixed ip public address and then port forwarding set up on the router pointing to your machine's internal address.

Alright. |||He can use the internal IP address of the X-Box from his LAN, and he can use his external IP address from outside his LAN if he forwards the ports needed through the computer to the X-Box.

I am running Vista Ultimate, and need to run my VPN connection for work emails. Windows XP had a way to launch the VPN connection when logging on to the OS. I don't see that option in Vista, and am unable to find anything about it in the help files. I would like the VPN connection to start when I log on to the OS. Any guidance would be appreciated.|||as you may know startup programs are still in Vista.

I have one wireless WRT54G router (hooked up through my broadband modem). I would like my Wii to be able to connect to my VPN via wireless WRT54G router.|||If you really mean VPN then you need to have the software to access it. That software is either PPTP, IPSEC, or L2TP. I'm trying to set up a VPN to connect the networks of multiple office buildings. I'm using Cisco equipment so setting up the VPN for the offices is easy but I'm not sure how to enable mobile users to remotely connect to our network via VPN. Is there any special hardware or software I need to purchase/download?|||they either need an account on the vpn endpoint (firewall or router) or in your domain, if it's the domain account you need to set up your vpn endpoint to use radius to authinticate. then you'll need to make sure the laptops/pda's have the cisco vpn client on them (free DL from cisco if you have a CCO account with them) unless your using the "easy web vpn" in which case on the vpn client you just need them to hit the website that your vpn endpoint hosts.

Is turning on my VPN interfering with my wireless connection?

I'm abroad and have been using a VPN to watch hulu and such things, but my connection to my homestay's wi fi keeps losing connection, and we have to call the company to fix it. There's no reason to believe that the VPN is causing it, but I was wondering if that's a possibility, and whether I should avoid using it.|||I'm not sure if you're talking about the Wi-Fi where you are or at your home. Regardless running a VPN tunnel through Wi-Fi should not cause the Wi-Fi signal itself to fail. You are of course adding overhead which may reduce the overall throughput (it will cause slower download speeds). Streaming video can eat up bandwidth but alone (not in a VPN tunnel) never causes me any problems. But when you put video in a VPN tunnel then you're talking about a whole lotta bandwidth. So what you might be experiencing is not the Wi-Fi dropping, but a lot of dropped packets that cause the tunnel to drop or the video to stutter or freeze.

Just a guess.|||i am not sure that you are connected to wifi is ok or maybe any other isue with wifi, exchange your vpn connection with new one and check ....|||yes.

What is the purpose of a VPN connection?

i have verizon wireless internet %26amp;

there is a buttons beside the connection button that says

"start vpn"

im just wondering what the purpose of that is?|||On a basic level think of it like this: If you work at a company that uses computers, that company probably has a network that it uses to communicate with each computer, including file sharing, email, etc..

If you are home, but want your computer to act as if it is at work, (file sharing, etc) just like it really was at work, then you would set up a VPN or "tunnel" from your computer to the server at work and the computer would act like it was actually at work.

It doesn't have to be a work network you're trying to tie into, but a "tunnel" is a good analogy.

edit: nothing will happen, literally, unless you tell it where to tunnel to. (That information can be given to you by the company web admin, or the network admin who run the network you want to tunnel to.)

Careful though, remember to switch back to verizon internet (public) or you may interrupt internet service until you do : )|||Definition of a Virtual Private Network (VPN):

In layman's terms--think of it as a "private tunnel" through which your data passes from point A to point B.

A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network that uses a public telecommunication infrastructure such as the Internet to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network. It aims to avoid an expensive system of owned or leased lines that can be used by only one organization.

It encapsulates data transfers between two or more networked devices which are not on the same private network so as to keep the transferred data private from other devices on one or more intervening local or wide area networks. There are many different classifications, implementations, and uses for VPNs.

Here's a diagram/graphic that should help: http://www.bath.ac.uk/bucs/networking/Im鈥?/a>

The Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is a method for implementing virtual private networks. PPTP uses a control channel over TCP and a GRE tunnel operating to encapsulate PPP packets.

Hope this clears things up--without too much techno-bable....|||its a virtual private network

What are the prerequisites of a Virtual Private Network? How do I actually go about installating a VPN?

If I don't have a fixed IP address, can I still install a VPN? I have website via a web hosting company. To run a WAN application, do I have to install the shared files at the website?|||How stuff works has a good article describing the basics of how Virtual Private Networks work. Basically you need to get yourself a router, once you have selected one you follow the directions that come with the router and set it up to share your connection to the internet with all computers in the house and then set up your computers to see each other.

It is not as difficult as it sounds, and the router directions are fairly simple.

What the VPN does, is allow you to connect to one network point (your internet computer conection at home), from another Internet conection, they key to that you having access to an Internet connection where you will be using your iPod touch. Does a Windows Secure Application Manager work as a VPN?

My office monitors my internet usage. If I use a "Windows Secure Application Manager" does it work like a VPN?

For instance if I have it running, does it make it more difficult for them to monitor my internet activity?|||WSAM is a VPN client for accessing Juniper Network VPNs. Unless you're configured to hit a Juniper Networks VPN device (and outbound VPN tunneling is permitted on your network) it's not going to do anything for you.

Even if you are authorized to hit a remote VPN device with WSAM, your systems admin can still monitor what you are doing on your machine depending upon how they monitor what you are doing. If the client is configured to block all local network access (only a rube of a sysadmin would allow that) your activities could not be monitored in real time but they'd instantly know that your machine was isolated from the network and could see where your tunnel session was going. That's enough to raise plenty of red flags in and of itself.

If you were on my network, you would not even be able to launch WSAM without authorization (let alone install it) since applications must be explicitly authorized to launch on all networked machines. This is controlled by Group Policy and there's no way for you to bypass that even if you have local admin access since we lock it down to domain and enterprise admins only.

If you want to keep your job, I'd suggest that you focus on your job and leave the recreational surfing for after hours from home.

I do not have administrative access at a certain computer (hence I cannot install nor configure a VPN connection), but I need to access my computer at home (the host). Both computers here and at home are running Windows XP. Is there a program that I can run without installing to setup a VPN client? Is there a way around my dilemma altogether?|||Here's an idea:

On your home PC, setup and configure copSSH.

http://www.itefix.no/i2/node/27

I've done this on my Windows 2003 machine but it works on WinXP. Other considerations in this setup are your router, DynDNS service etc.

On your work PC, what about using KiTTY which is a SSH client for Windows BUT it runs off a USB key... so no installation

Now, you can SSH from your work PC to your home PC. Also possible is to setup a Remote Desktop session. Another software package Tunnelier helps setup and configure this sort of connectivity. And a portable / non-install version exists, too.

|||No, there is no VPN client that is not install based. But there are programs that you can install in quite mode, or hidden in your client pc. Without normal users knowing that there is a VPN Client.

There are programs such as NETSUPPORT MANAGER that can install through networks ang gateways, but if your client is login at the user account or you do not have sufficient rights to install to a specific client, I am afraid you will not be able to install.

Can two contivity VPN instances be installed on one computer?

My wife and I work for the same company and both have vpn using separate machines at home. Our company uses Nortel's Contivity VPN setup. We would like to consolidate down to only having one computer. We have been told that we must have separate VPN setups. Is there a way to have two separate VPN setups on the same computer? Would using two separate user accounts on the computer help make this possible?|||Go to the network setup wizard in the network connection (control panel) %26amp; set up the VPN connections individually. During the setup process you will have to enter what I presume would be 2 different domain names or IP addresses. Then simply create a shortcut for each, you should also be able to connect to both of these simultaneously. If that fails, then yes, separate user accounts will eliminate the issue as long as the destination IP/DNS is different, if not then you should still be able to do so without simultaneous connection to VNC. Also once completed make sure that the firewall is configured to allow these connections through, in the event that you shall decide to configure these VPN's from scratch.

Hope that this was of some help.

Does a vpn allow people from across the globe from a different network across the internet to connect your?

does a vpn allow people from across the globe from a different network across the internet to connect your private network? can't you do this without a vpn.|||Yes, you can. There are several ways to form a connection (telnet, ftp, ssl, ssh, http, https). A VPN simply allows you to create a secure tunnel across two locations. What that means is that a virtual tunnel is created where the actual data packets are encrypted and encapsulated in a "box" with exposed source and destination information for routing purposes. The user seems like he or she is on the same network, but topologically is not (different physical location, different network id), and the traffic is encrypted, so cannot be "spied" on (given that the encryption is high enough). It's very useful for people that work remotely from the main servers, for example.|||Anyone connected to the Internet can connect to a VPN (assuming they have the proper creds). There used to be a problem with a person on a private network connecting to another private network thru VPN but that's been eliminated through a process called NAT Traversal.

VPN is not the only way to remotely connect to a private network. There is still Frame Relay and point-to-point available and a number of other ways. But VPN is currently the cheapest and easiest way to make a remote user appear like he's on the LAN. One exception might be remote access services like Go-To-My-PC and similar services where the remote person takes control of a local computer. That may be cheaper and easier than VPN but it costs you 1 extra PC (the one that the remote user takes over).

You could also simply allow access to your servers without using VPN -- just use HTTP, FTP, Etc for access through the web.|||Yes, this is what it does.

How can I see my home network workgroup while connected to a VPN?

I have a home network with several computers, and they all belong to a workgroup. Now I also have a laptop from my employer. If I connect to my employer's VPN from the laptop I cannot see my home network's workgroup, but I can see my workgroup if I am not connected to their VPN. Unfortunately, that means I have to bounce on and off the VPN any time I want to print something to the printer connected to one of my home PCs. Inconvenient.

Is there a way I can see my home network's workgroup while I'm connected to my employer's VPN? Or do you suppose they have that locked down by group policy and there's no way around it?|||Sorry, there's no way around that.

The VPN is locked down so that traffic from your home LAN cannot pass to the corporate network. This is standard security practice. Many corporate networks have been infected by connections from unprotected home or public networks, hence the restrictions.|||TFTP

|||It is possible your VPN has desktop policies assigned to it that block that kind of thing. VPN should only allow you to tunnell through the internet to securely link to the company site, and should not effect all traffic, but it may be encapsulating all traffic with the VPN IP address and therefore, that would not be recognized by the rest of your home workgroup.|||One other possibility is your employer's VPN network overlaps your home network. For example, your VPN connection assigns you the IP address 192.168.0.100 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and your home LAN IP is 192.168.0.2 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0. The VPN client software assumes anything you want to reach at 192.168.0.x is in your employer's network, so you can't reach anything locally. Consult your employer's network folks for assistance. You should be able to diagnose this from the output of 'ipconfig /all' in a Windows operating system. If this is the problem, your quickest fix is changing all the IP addresses of your home network. If you're using DHCP from your home router, you can change the DHCP server settings there.

Even if you aren't assigned an IP address that overlaps your home network, consult your employer's network folks to see if your home network overlaps with a network at work. Your VPN client software may temporarily install routes on your home machine to route traffic to your employer's network when attempting to reach IP addresses that you assume are only used at home. You may be able to diagnose this from the output of 'route print' at a command prompt in a Windows operating system.

Charter defaults to Yahoo search and not allowing VPN connection to company drives?

I am unable to connect to company drives via VPN because Internet Explorer defaults to Yahoo Search which says "cannot find" because they go to the wrong IP address; how do I stop this so i can work remotely?|||You probably either need to access whatever it is using an IP addresse in the URL, or change a setting to use your company's internal DNS when using the VPN. Although, some browers or settings might still try to do a search or assume a domain on the name if there is no dot in the hostname part of a URL, so you may need to include your company domain on the name.

What is the difference between PPTP VPN services and SSTP VPN sevices?

There are also Premium Socks and HTTP Proxy services on this VPN and i wanna choose one of them but i don't understand what is the difference between them.|||SSTP includes header identification courtesy of Microsoft. This was done intentionally to make it easy to block at the request of ISP's . Any router can block it by just reading the header. If it matches the SSTP header code you drop the traffic. It's the easiest VPN in the world to block.

PPTP was originally a very flawed protocol which has been patched over time. It has a tendency to drop the VPN tunnel and not let you know about it while sending all your traffic in the clear. Since it's fixed port is it also easy to block by blocking the port.

No proxy is secure and they will all send your true IP address over protocols that are not forwarded over the proxy. This includes Flash and Java among others.

All of these protocols are flawed. If you want robust VPN service use OpenVPN.

Can they break into my VPN if I use unsecured wireless?

My university provides free unsecured wireless, but I use a VPN to access the internet by going through my home computer which is on 24/7. Is there anyway some rogue from the IT department could hack my VPN?|||What VPN are you using? How is it set up? This question can't be answered without some specifics.|||Most likely, if the person knows what they are doing then yes.|||They would really have to know what they are doing.

If I am using an unsecured public wireless network, but connected to a VPN, is my information secure?

Is the information transmitted / received secure because it is through a VPN? |||Your information to the VPN network *is* secure. What you have to watch for is that most VPNs use split routing which means that if you are accessing a network or subnet within the VPN configured nets, then the traffic will go through the VPN and be secured. If, however, you access a non VPN server such as google, yahoo, or any other public web site, then your information is typically routed through the public network and *not* secured by the VPN. Of course any security sensitive site will be https which provides it's own end-point encryption separate (or in addition) to the VPN. |||That's what a VPN is for. You can make it even more secure, though, but the VPN would have to be configured for that.

Can my employer check my web browsing history even though I use my own home wireless network and their VPN ?

I work from home( with a company laptop) and use my own home's wireless network and the company's VPN to access the web. Even though it is my own personal network, can they still monitor my web use?|||Yes. If you are using the companies VPN then *all* of your internet traffic goes through the company. Meaning they can quite easily see what websites you visit.

One of the purposes of company laptops being configured to only allow internet access through a VPN is so they can keep tabs on what employees are doing on company laptops (I.e. not using it for personal/recreational use)

Is there a way to get past a firewall to access a vpn?

My husband works for a university and we live in an on campus apartment. The university's network blocks me from connecting to my company's vpn.|||1) Find out what port your companies VPN is running on, ask your IT department. Many times they can set up on a different port that is unblocked. Port 80 and 443 are never blocked as it would stop web traffic and secure web sessions. If your company can switch you to one of those ports no problem.

2) Explain to the university IT department your problem and with the information you got above ask if they can create a solution.

3) If none of this works, get yourself a personal VPN known for blowing through this kind of blocked network. It will cost you a few dollars a month. Once you have blown through the University VPN just establish your regular company tunnel inside the personal VPN tunnel and everything will connect.

I have used SurfBouncer at several universities and corporate sites all over and it always gets through.|||Here is a list of ports and their associated services:

Or witopia on both ends. You could use Hamachi for this, I am more familiar with this one.

But, the point I wanted to make is what comes after. Typically over a vpn you cannot access resources by name so you will need to assign a static ip address for the target resource. And make sure the two networks have different ip address schemes. Say 192.168.1.1 on one side and 192.168.135.1 on the other. Then if you want to get a reliable connection on side X to a resource on side Y use the ip address.

if the company is enforcing VPN policy to prevent split-tunneling, then only your computer is connected and visible to the corporate office via the VPN tunnel.

one way to tell is to see if you can access other computers on your network or have them access network shares or resources on your VPN-connected PC. if not, then you are safe.

if you can indeed still access other PCs or have them access resources on yours even when you are connected via VPN to your office, then it is still very very unlikely, although technically possible. But even in that case, it would require an IT person at your corporate office to tdecide to break into your very own computer remotely trying to find security holes if any, which would be a big problem for him, and a potentially big source of lawsuit money for you :-)

--%26gt; I wouldn't worry about that!
