I am using Windows 7 and I'm running a remote desktop connection via a VPN server. Now let's say I want to open a Word document on that server with MS Word on my own computer without downloading it. Is it possible? How?|||Not possible for the simple reason that a RDP simply gives you control of the remote machine. Instead of you physically being at the remote computer it allows you to access the console over the network (VPN or otherwise). You cannot make the remote system do what it is not capable of (applications not installed on that machine cannot be executed on the machine). Yes you can map your local resources such as drives, printers etc., but they are simply files/shares on the network. However to be able to use/open the remote system still needs the corresponding application to be installed on it.
I think I understand where you are coming from. You have MS Office application installed on one system %26amp; instead of buying more licenses for other systems you want to be able to use that installation for the rest of the systems. That is a license violation %26amp; you cannot do it without terminal server licenses or some other third party solutions (such as Altris).
Hopefully that answers you question.
