Let's say we have servers A, B and C, all connected to the internet. My computer talks to server A.
Scenario 1: I open a VPN with server B and download some porn hosted on server C.
Scenario 2: I visit a proxy hosted on server B and download some porn hosted on server C.
My impression is that in both cases, all data exchanged between me and server C has to go through B. Is this right?|||Yes you are right.
Main difference is, a VPN tunnel will allow your entire connection to server B to be encapsulated and secure....
Verses, the Proxy connection, which could just be a regular "open" connection...|||The proxy is wide open and can leak information such as ip addresses or in the worst case be totally unencrypted. Flash from a movie will go outside the proxy and reveal the true ip addresses. A VPN will encrypt the entire network connection so your ISP doesn't have a record of you going to the pron site and the porn site doesn't know your true ip address.
